How the free 30 minutes work

Most people arrive worried about what they are walking into. Here is the half hour, to scale.

  1. You tell us what is happening

In your own words, at your own pace. Nothing you say obliges you to anything.

  2. We ask questions and explain the law

We ask about children, property, timing and safety, then explain how Oregon courts approach situations like yours and what the process would look like from here.

  3. Your options and what they cost

You leave knowing your realistic options, roughly how long each takes, how we would charge for it, and what to do next, even if that next step does not involve us.

Useful to have with you

  • Any court papers you have received or filed
  • A rough list of property, debts and accounts
  • Your children's current schedule, if children are involved
  • Questions written down, so none are forgotten

Afterwards

There is no follow-up sales call. If you want us to act for you, we send a written engagement letter setting out the scope of work and how fees are charged. Nothing starts until you sign it.

What we help with

Four kinds of family matter, all under Oregon law. If yours is not listed, ask in the consultation and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit.

Divorce

Dissolution of marriage in Oregon

Whether you and your spouse agree on most things or on very little, we explain the process from filing to judgment, and what each step asks of you.

  • Dividing property, debts and retirement accounts
  • Spousal support
  • Uncontested divorces handled through agreed paperwork
  • Contested cases taken to court when agreement is not possible

Custody & parenting time

Parenting plans, custody, child support

A parenting plan sets out where children live and when. We help you build one that fits your children's school weeks, your work and the distance between homes, and we help change one when life changes.

Parent AParent BOne common pattern, the 2-2-3 schedule. Yours may look nothing like it.

Mediation

Reaching agreement outside court

In mediation, both of you sit down with a neutral mediator to work out property, support or parenting arrangements yourselves. We act as mediator for couples, or advise one of you while you mediate elsewhere, never both at once.

Mediation is not right for every family. Where there has been abuse or one person feels unable to speak freely, we will say so and suggest another route.

Prenuptial agreements

Before marriage, or after it

A prenuptial agreement records how you will handle property, debts and support if the marriage ends. We draft agreements, review ones drafted by the other side, and explain each clause in plain English.

Give yourselves time: an agreement signed in a hurry, close to the wedding, is easier to challenge later.

The two partners

Every client works directly with one of us. We also review each other's cases, so a second partner knows your matter if one of us is away.

Ruth Harlow

Partner · divorce and property

Ruth handles divorces where there is property, a business or retirement savings to divide. She would rather spend an hour explaining a settlement than have you sign something you do not understand.

How we charge

Family matters are stressful enough without surprise invoices. You will know how a matter is charged before any work begins.

First consultation

Free, 30 minutes, with a partner.

Fixed fees

For work with a predictable shape, such as an uncontested divorce or drafting a prenuptial agreement, we quote one fixed price in writing.

Hourly, with estimates

Contested matters are billed hourly against a retainer. We give you a written estimate for each stage, and tell you before an estimate is exceeded.

Mediation

Billed hourly and usually shared between both people, in whatever proportion you agree.

Monthly statements

Itemised, in plain language: who did what, for how long, and why.

Request your free consultation

Tell us how to reach you and when suits you. We reply within one working day to arrange a time.

Give at least one. If it is not safe for us to leave a message, say so in the note.
