Family law
Portland, Oregon

When a family changes shape, you should know what happens next.

Harlow & Reyes is a two-partner family law practice in Portland. We handle divorce, custody and parenting time, mediation and prenuptial agreements, and we explain each step in plain language before you decide anything.

Four kinds of work, all of it family law

Divorce

Oregon courts call it dissolution of marriage. We take you through filing, dividing property and debt, spousal support and, where children are involved, the parenting plan.

  • Uncontested and contested dissolutions
  • Property, debt and retirement division
  • Spousal support

Custody & parenting time

Decisions about where children live and how time is shared. We help you build a workable parenting plan, and represent you in court when agreement isn't possible.

  • Parenting plans and schedules
  • Custody and parenting-time disputes
  • Modifying existing orders

Mediation

Both people sit down with a neutral mediator to reach their own agreement, usually faster and at lower cost than going to trial. Mateo Reyes mediates in English and Spanish.

  • Divorce and parenting-plan mediation
  • Reviewing agreements reached elsewhere
  • Representation in court-ordered mediation

Prenuptial agreements

Agreements made before marriage (Oregon law calls them premarital agreements) about property, debts and support. We draft them, or review one your partner's lawyer has drafted.

  • Drafting and negotiation
  • Independent review for one partner
  • Postnuptial agreements

We don't handle criminal defense, immigration or bankruptcy. If your situation involves one of these, we'll say so in the first conversation and suggest where to look.

How the free 30-minute consultation works

  1. You send a request

Use the form below or call. We ask for the other person's name so we can run a conflict check: we can't advise both people in the same family matter.

  2. We reply within one business day

A member of our office contacts you to set a time: at our office on Hawthorne, by video, or by phone. Evening video slots are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

  3. The 30 minutes

You tell us what's going on. A partner explains how the Oregon process works for your situation, the likely steps, a realistic sense of timing, and how fees would work. You can ask anything.

  4. Afterwards, you decide

There's no pressure to hire us. If you want to go ahead, we send a written engagement letter that sets out the scope of work and fees before any work starts.

Useful to have with you

  • Any court papers you've received or filed
  • Existing orders, parenting plans or agreements
  • A rough list of major assets and debts
  • Your questions, written down

What 30 minutes can't cover

  • A full review of documents
  • Drafting or filing anything
  • Representation; that starts only after a signed engagement letter

Two partners. You'll work with one of us directly.

How we charge, in writing before we start

First consultation
Free, 30 minutes, no obligation.
Flat fees
Prenuptial agreements and uncontested divorces are usually quoted as a fixed fee once we know the scope. The quote is in your engagement letter.
Hourly work
Contested divorce and custody matters are billed by the hour against a retainer held in a client trust account. You get an itemized invoice every month.
Mediation
Billed by the hour and usually shared between both people.

Rates are set out in the engagement letter. If a step in your case is likely to cost more than it's worth to you, we'll say so before we take it.
